Despite starting out in 15mm, I've almost exclusively a 25mm player for that
last 6 years or so. My 15s were relegated to "toy soldier" status for my little
boy. Well, my "little" boy is now 11, is playing Warrior (at least Fast Warrior
and Fantasy Warrior), and so 15mm is back in my playing life.
This summer I went through and rebased and repaired my 15mm collection (roughly
2000 figures; that took some doing). What I'm now left with is a handful of
painted figures I have no particular use for, and a larger quantity (maybe 200
figures or so) of unpainted 15mm figures that I have no particular use for.
My plan is to auction off this excess through eBay or some other outlet. The
problem is I have no idea what a reasonable price is for what I've got; I
haven't bought a 15mm figure, painted or otherwise, in years.
The painted figures are about 60 figures or so of Early Byzantines. The paint
job is mediocre at best, including a unit of LC that was among the first units
I painted almost 20 years ago when I had no real idea what I was doing. Still,
they could make a cheap "starter set" for someone interested in DBA, DBM,
Warrior, or Fast Warrior in that period. So what's a mediocre or worse painted
figure worth in 15mm?
The unpainted figures are an assortment of Dark Ages-Early Feudal period stuff,
both foot and mounted (and one bag of Early Persian spearmen; not sure where
they came from), mostly from Essex. So what's an Essex unpainted 15mm figure
worth these days?
Any input suggestions from you guys would be appreciated.

Mark,
I have quite a bit of experience with this. A short answer would be to
not worry about what they are worth but take good digital photos,
explain what you have in detail, start the auctions off at 99 cents
and let Ebay bidders decide the final prices ;-)
I know, probably not the answer you are looking for but this is the
most expedient way and having a no reserve auction can generate quite
a bidding frenzy and you will save on auction fees this way.
Essex unpainted will usually go for 25 cents a foot figure and double
for mounted. Retails are at $3.69 per normal pack at Wargames these
days. Mediocre figures bring low prices, figure on 50 - 75 cents a
figure for foot and double this for cavalry as a benchmark.
Prices can and do go higher due to auction excitement and demand.
Pictures really help sell your stuff; even if you have to take scans
of the figures, it beats not knowing for the buyer. You can sometimes
find pictures of unpainted stuff on the Web if this helps you out.
Make sure your auction ends on a Saturday or Sunday evening as this
will generate the most last minute bids. I have seen items jump an
additional 50% in the last few minutes of an auction. Sometimes,
however, items reach their peak a few days before auction's end.
Put Essex, DBM and 15mm in the auction title. Describe items in
DBM/DBA terms to help out the newer players that don't know what you
have. Anyway, all of this seems to generate lots of interest. Check
out a couple of my auctions on Ebay right now. My seller id is cmt1965
and I put other details in my auctions regarding shipping and payment.
I have learned from experience that the more you put in your ad, the
less questions you have to ask. Needless to say, get payment FIRST and
make sure it clears!
Sincerely,
Chris
