Jon,
Couple of simple (hopefully) questions about charging:
1. If a unit charges thru a friendly LI screening unit, the charging
unit then becomes disordered, correct? (per 6.521)
2. The disorder above is considered a "rally-cured" disorder, and the
unit must wait until the next bound to rally (either after approaches
or at the end phase depedning on the unit's cohesion), correct? (per
5.222 and 5.4)
3. To avoid the above, or in other situations, when can a charging
unit "choose" to drop back units to pass "gaps"? (per 6.53)
Actually, #3 is the most confusing to me...I am unsure when I can
choose to drop back units during a charge. For example, if there is a
friendly unit between my charging unit and the enemy unit, but only
one element of my charging unit would have to contact the friendly
unit, can I then just drop that unit back? Does it matter if the
units can/can't legally interpenetrate? What if the unit I want to
avoid is an enemy unit? What if it is a terrain feature (like
something that would slow my unit down or disorder it if I pass thru it)?
Well, maybe this wasn't so simple of a question after all...
Thanks,
Dan

1. Yes. There are list rules that make exceptions...
2. End phase. If it is disordered, it will by definition be unsteady.
3. You choose to drop back elements or not. sometimes the only way you can
hit an enemy is to drop back. Sometimes you have the choice of dropping back
and being deeper or - if one of the shoulders of the gap is a friendly body you
can interpenetrate - you can choose not ot drop back and be disordered but hit
with more elements.

and if it's not a gap proper? meaning it's not one bounded on BOTH sides by
something,
but say only on the ONE side with your LI. You'd prefer not to charge your LEHI
through it
and become disordered. Can you still drop back elements to miss the LI?

No. 6.53 says: Dropping back elements for "free" to pass through
gaps can only occur if the gap is narrower than the moving body.
