Scot,

I have always had the understanding that artillery was organic to the
Roman Legion.

So why do legions posted as allies leave all the artillery at home?

Lists 3, 8, and 14, IW, gives the "possibility" and the "potential" for
involvement of full legions. Should they not be allowed to take their
artillery with them?

Ed,

I wonder if you recall. . . didn't some of the old lists allow for artilary
to be a sub unit of the legionarii? If this were allowed would it take a list
rule to allow them to fire overhead of the legions. Now, "that would be the
answer to knights who decided to get froggy with the Legions!

Kelly,

I think that your comment would more closely represent how the legions
used their mobile light artillery than is now the case.

These pieces were very light. They were placed within the files to give
close support and then quickly pulled out of the way if needed. When
they were attached directly to the maneuver unit they did not take up any
additional frontage and did not impact the formation.

I have always thought that they should be represented as combat factors,
and not as actual pieces on the ground. Should be more like caltrops
where your combat factor goes up and the unit is given an inherent
missile / artillery factor.
