I see a lot of Roman Lists where people take their Legionaries as 4E Units.
I have a tendency to run mine in 6E units, usually in a 2x3 block, but
sometimes (especially if facing Irr Foot, which I seem to be fighting a lot
of these days) I run them in a 3x2 block.
I play LIR, and have put all the bells and whistles in so they are HTW, JLS,
D, Sh.
While not a “new” player to the game, I was hoping some of the more
experienced players out there could tell me why they prefer 4E over 6E, or
vice versa.
I know in some instances, it does come down to points, especially in the
1200 point tournaments.
But from my experience, other than the points, there’s not a lot of tactical
drawback to having an 6E unit, and in some cases counting as 20 figs for
Casualties has come in handy. Is it mainly a “style of play” issue?
Thanks,
Todd

I agree that running 4E unit of Legio has not been that great. I have run
them with 6E myself , but am going to try the 4E units again especially,
with the exchanging rank rule. With 4E they can take alot of CPF.Hopefully
the exchange of ranks with help.

This is an old question and is mostly a matter of playing style.
In the past the optimum sized regular unit was 6 elements. This
allowed you to turn, move 40 paces, and turn again -- becoming the
same width unit as you were previously.
OTHO, 4 element units are more maneuverable and fit into spaces
easier, wheel easier, etc.
A 2 element wide by 3 element deep formation gives the best of both
worlds. LIR can do this with front ranks HTW,JLS,D,Sh and rear rank
B,Sh.
