Yes I was thinking a similar situation: Running 2 3
or 4 4E units of legionaires in a column one behind
the other. Set the column towards the weak points and
let the LI velites stand and die in between the
columns. This is more akin to French Nappy tactics,
but it sounds as though it would work. Just meatgrind
a hole in the enemy line. lather rinse repeat
As for vs mounted, well... if I were fighting mounted,
which I always am, I'd roll high :)

My question to you Chris is this, Did entire cohorts
replace other cohorts in this manner? And if this were
the case, did the legionaires throw their pila amongst
their friends and foes alike when replacing their
friends in hand to hand combat? Further musings. . .
it seems that this maneuver would be harder to pull of
against a mounted foe that is following up than that
of a foot unit. Perhaps this ploy should only be
allowed to be used against foot opponents. . . just a
thought for my 2 cents.

Don't know. First instinct is to say no, that upon Marius reforms the
manipular tactics changed. But I have not done the research to say
authoritatively. I am confident that Scott has. The rule with multiple uses
of HTW is, imho, as much simplicity as anything else. How would we keep
track of which units used htw when? And what of multiple element units ie 4
or 6 elements? Currently if a large unit of legionairres is hit by a single
element front and then in subsequent bounds charged by other opponents, it
would still get HTW for each charge it received frontally. How would you
propose keeping track of which elements had used htw and which had not.
First contact is a good rule of thumb.

Also remember that the replacement in combat only
applies when the cohorts are facing foot. If mounted
is recoiling the legions than they are SOL for help.

Todd, could you point me to that part of the rules or
lists that says that rank replacement is only allowed
to be used on foot? I missed that in the reading my
error!
