Scott Holder brought up a point over on our GoreAMwar rules group that I've
tried to make many times. Each rules system has its advantages and
disadvantages. They each appeal to different levels and complexity of play.
There are many casual ancients/medieval players who are perfectly content with
the simplicity of DBA. Others like the complex WRG 7th system. Still others
enjoy the look of their game as much or more than the game itself and opt for
WHAB.

The ubiquitous DBM system offers many opponents and a system that has been
established for many years. It has many qualities that appeal to both marginal
players (stylized play and a generic feel to tactical situations) as well as to
hard core tournament players (the ability to meet many different types of
opponents and armies). The DBM rules have been extensively written about and
have many rules groups and articles supporting them, notably in Slingshot and
Spearpoint.

Armati has largely faded lately for a number of reasons. These rules are clean,
but do not allow enough tactical variance and variety of play for my personal
tastes, even though I did help work on them. They do provide a very quick game,
which certainly works well for a single day's tournament play.

Hack, Might of Arms, Warrior and Medieval Warfare (as well as Ancient Warfare)
all have advantages as well, unique to each. The latter two also appeal to
tournament players, while all of the above make great demo games. DoB is a bit
different in that is has a very large element of role-playing, one of its
appealing features.

Thus, all the rules have different appeal. Chose the one you like best...and
that has good rules author support...and go with it. No longer are we relegated
to just one rules set with such a wide variety to chose from.

Terry
