Certainly 4 to a stand missile fire is powerful.

Why? Well, it is an offense that you can launch without having to charge.
So, you can use it and still approach/counter/retire. You can employ it
typically a bound before charges can be brought to bear. That gives you an
solid, flexible attack, earlier.

Most such missile troops don't have that great a hth-combat effect...so
certainly some infantry can oppose them (as other writers have suggested).
However, such infantry can't do it alone...as if you bring unsupported close
order or loose order attacking foot against me...I'll screen it off with
targets it can never catch, and concentrate my attack elsewhere.

Also...open terrain gives your mounted the ability to cause waver tests on
loose order missle types in the open...just be very very careful Wink.

Terrain can help, but will never be a complete solution...as you will almost
never get all the pieces you need to 'hide' from shooting. Also, realize
that when you do something like this, you are now a passive player...setting
up in terrain and waiting to see what your opponent does. Attacking out of a
defensive position is hard...practice it as much as you can before
attempting.

Absolutely dead on Frank.

My thoughts on terrain are less passive waiting than using it as a
channeling device. Still there is something to be said for cover
when facing missiles Smile

At the higher levels of play, terrain is easier to 'defeat' than 'control'.
This is deliberate, as terrain should play a minor, if important, role in any
ancient/medieval simulation.
A comp player will know that he can reliably get the center clear and may face
one flank with rough terrain and will have planned accordingly. There will
therefore be 3/4 of the table that the other player cannot hide in and must have
some other plan for.
