I have uploaded a file on shooting arc, and how the imaginary element
may or may not work where troops intervene between the shooter and
target.
Can the elephants fire on the Swiss pike block?
I believe that the elephants can not shoot. Although the `imaginary'
element would bring one elephant into arc, it would still need to be
able to fire from the imaginary position. This would require firing
over the heads of the Janissaries, which is not possible.
However, reading 8.51 says that in order for an element to shoot it
must be in arc and have at least a 1 element wide gap. This would
make it possible? If the imaginary element is just used to bring the
existing element into arc, then it appears possible to shoot.
Which is correct Jon?

One element, the one closer to the Swiss, can indeed shoot.
The other elements are out of arc.
The element that can shoot has a gap large than one element to shoot through
and has the ability to draw a line from both front corners to the target
without being blocked by the janissary unit (see 12.42).

Jon,
Isn't the light infantry unit nearest within arc to the elephant
element in question?

I don't know. Quite possibly if the diagram is to scale.
I only answered the question, 'can' that El element shoot at the Swiss. I'd
need distances to answer if it had to shoot the LI instead - I took the question
to be one about visibility and not shooting priority.
