I agree with Larry that shooting is more a function of the tournament format.
I think the iron man list increases this effect. Historical enemies used
tactics, terrain and some times specialized troop types to fight archers in
their enemies' armies. Heavy infantry with a shield can close with archers and
usually kill them in the rules, which is historical accurate. In Warrior,
terrain picks can hinder archers. Many players only look at what terrain can do
for them and not how it can hinder their opponent. As Larry points out, a bow
is the same for the entire time period of the rules. This simplifies play but
occasionally results in non-historical results.
As for Lechfeld, the Magyars bows and strings were wet so they were not as
effective as normal. Fortunately for the German knights the ground supported
their charges. The Early Byzantine commander, Narses used his bow armed
infantry extremely effectively. He used terrain or heavy units to channel the
Franks
into fire sacks, which is an effective tactic in Warrior.
