PostPosted: Sat Sep 17, 2005 10:02 pm    Post subject: Slingshot has a new editor

This is a short introduction and the inevitable request for material
for Slingshot.

First for anyone who is wondering what Slingshot is and why it has
an editor a short explanation. (More details about the Society and
it's products can be found on our website at
http://www.societyofancients.com/ )

The Society of Ancients is an international amateur society for the
promotion of the study of ancient and medieval military history and
wargaming the period 3000 BC to 1500 AD. It is run by volunteers for
the benefit of our membership world-wide. The Society publishes a bi-
monthly journal, Slingshot, and sponsors various events around the
world, including wargames tournaments. The Society is not run for
profit but is supported by, and exists for, the benefit of its
members and to promote Ancient and Medieval military history and
wargaming. Membership is open to all, renewable annually.

The Society publishes a 40 to 60 page A4 journal, Slingshot, 6 times
a year. Most of the content is contributed by Society members on a
wide range of items related to Ancient and Medieval military history
and wargaming. There are articles, reviews, letters, game design
ideas, as well as the usual discussion on various wargames rules.
Competition results and the occasional battle report are also
published.

I have the privilege, and daunting task, of taking over the
editorship from John Graham-Leigh who has filled the post with great
success for the past 4 years.

As noted above material for Slingshot is almost exclusively supplied
by Society members and it's quality and success depend on those
contributions. Articles can be on any subject within the Society's
remit and can be as long or as short as the writer wishes. Articles
range from the academic to the light hearted and one of Slingshot's
great strengths is the variety of subjects and contributors.

It should be noted that, rightly or wrongly, Slingshot is seen as
dominated by WRG/DBM articles. I cannot stress enough that it is
Society and editorial policy to represent all aspects of our hobby
and previous editors have worked hard to obtain material relating to
as wide a range of wargaming rule sets as possible. As the content
of Slingshot is determined by what the editor receives it is up to
contributors to determine what goes in, although rest assured that
the editor will be for ever chasing articles to try and obtain a
good mix.

In addition to historical and wargaming articles there are the
Review and Guardroom (letters) sections of Slingshot that need
filling. These are both areas that can be difficult for an editor to
find material for and submissions are especially needed in this area.

Of course the editor never thinks they have enough material so all
contributions are most welcome especially those on unusual or little
known subjects. If you have an idea for an article or are wondering
if you could contribute in any way please get in contact at
soaeditor@... – it's your chance for fame and glory in
print.

I look forward to hearing from as many of you as possible.
