Greetings Horsemen,

I was wondering about something. . . Why can't the Swiss be
armored as EHI anymore? Certainly their contemporaries used this
armor and it also seems that extra heavy armor was utilized by the
Swiss. So why is this option not available to the Swiss? Certainly
some sort of list rule could be made to give the swiss an
accomodation. . . ? Otherwise, the Swiss will be lovely targets for
missile fire forcing more waivers than you can shake a Pike at! :(

Cruising the internet I found this interesting link. I wonder what
the armor in the lower picture would be classified as. . . or is it
an accurate picture of Swiss soldiers? Oh well, here is the link. . .

Even Barkers list allowed, at most, 1 in 8 figures, to be upgraded to EHI.
That presents a narrow front for all the unarmored foot to hide behind.

Historically, the Swiss stood up to missile fire from mostly CB and HG, with
a possible run in with LB. Upgrading to EHI would not protect you
sufficiently from these weapon types to be worth the fatigue and movement
penalties.

In Warrior terms, the main "protection" the Swiss exhibited historically from
missile units was to mass up, or just form few large units, and their Reg 'A'
morale.

I agree with everything Phil says. However, historically there is evidence
of upgrading armor in the swiss ranks. Yes the cost difference may not be
worth the pay off, but that should be for the general to decide, not the list
writer. That is my opinion by the way, not a statement of pontification.

Upgrading armor may not pay dividends against the various missles they are
likely to face, but would be very useful against the various hth weapons that
they will encounter, particularly as they are shieldless.

There could be penalties for taking the upgraded armor, such as no loose
order benefits, but this is not a minor issue. I believe this to be
particularly
so given the amount of effort that has been put into the historical accuracy
of the lists to date.
Chris
