The Mission of Infantry, used even today, still pertains. The Infantry
closes with the enemy by means of fire and maneuver in order to destroy or to
capture him or to repel his assault by fire, close combat, and counter attack.

HTW works. So does L. Pa - equipped troops have to have someone nearby to save
them on their second bound of combat. They make a nice one bound blocking
force, but if you get them alone, any shock troop will kill them.

Yes and perhaps that was my distraction in the game. Had I put my
LHI 2hcw/sh on them, then perhaps I'd have caught him standing to
face my impetuous charge 9@6=45 to his 8@5=32 and 4@3=10. All dice
being equal, I'll get good odds against his shieldless MI rear rank
in the second bound, but I will be taking doulbe HTH casualties so
will have to dispatch him within a couple of bounds or become a
liability to my own troops.
I looked at the HTW factors, but they didn't look that good to me in
the second bound. Take a Roman 4E RgB HI HTW/J/sh; 12@6=60 since the
impet enemy charge cancels mine. His charge hits with 8@7=48 and
4@5=16 for a total of 64. the Romans take more and recoil
disordered. In the second bound I think the Romans will go away
12@0 or 12, while the 2HCT guys do -3 for tired and disordered with
8@3=20 and 4@1=6, so 26 or 1 CPF on the Romans. Second combat
disorder for the Romans prompts a waver. Perhaps I'm not calculating
correctly, or I've missed something you see Jon?
I also didn't really think about the HK L/sh factors on the 2HCT (4E
IrgC HI/MI 2HCT/J Pa): 5@6=25 or 1 CPF to a 16 man unit. coming back
he gets 4@3 and 3@2 or 16. the HK follow up/expand and are now
tired, while the HI are recoiled disordered. Next bound HK fight
6@5=24, while the now MI fight 8@3 and 4@1 for 26. The HK are now
going to break off tired with 10 CPF total and the infantry will
rally forward disordered. I don't know why I didn't consider pushing
the knights into them myself :)
Of course in the second bound it when the other unit should hit the
infantry I know, but I like the above scenario just fine.
Food for thought, thanks Jon

I spent most of my military carrier in the infantry, so I am familiar
with our lot in life. However to "close with and destroy the enemy"
which is how it is actually spelled out for us dumb grunts (read non-
officer types), didn't work for me this last game. The problem as
Jon perhaps aluded to, was that I used by close order to confront his
rather than my shock troops. I would have been better served by
allowing my close order infantry to absorbe his missile fire.
Lessons learned :)
BTW, the infantry repel "his" assault with the radio usually

I got it now. I calculated as sheildless, but the English are now
disordered shieldless MI from the second rank so are a 6 factor not
4. Sorry. This will recoil the English but not cause a second
disorder. the English will be sitting at around 12 CPF and the
Romans around 6 going into the third bound.

Ok, Boyd. If 12@6 isn't disordering these guys, they must be at least 6E and in
a 3x2 block. If that's true then you don't kill them with just one unit of 4E,
since you'd be outnumbered...lol

You are facing the following army just deployed by your opponant:
5x 2E IrgA/B HK/HC L/sh
2x 2E RgC LC B/sh
12E IrgC HI/MI/MI JLS/sh B
6E IrgC HI/MI/MI LTS/sh CB
12E IrgD LMI B/IPW
6E IrgD LI B
6E LHI 2HCW/JLS/sh
There is a small wood on one flank and a hill on the other. The IrgD
LMI are on the hill while the LHI are pointed at the wood. The LI
have been forced marched to the center of the board. The close order
infantry are flanked by K who are again flanked by LC.
How would you approached neutralizing this armies obvious shock
troops while avoiding the energy sponge HI?
Please indicate if you are using EL/LMI or LMI/SHK or some other
combo army. Bear in mind the LHI would come out of the woods if EL
were present and other tactically obvious counter ploys.
TIA

OK, Maybe it's just me, but I am having a hard time
visualizing the setup as you described it.
If you could, and if you'd like, can you send me an
email describing the setup from say Your Table left to
Table right? I can put in on a powerpoint slide and
post it to the group, or make it a gif or jpeg for
those without powerpoint.
I think This is an interesting excercise!
