As I finish refitting my soon to be victorious
Normans, I was wondering if this list could provide me
with a little tactical advice. In the 1st Crusader
list for FW, I get a 12E block of pilgrims (irrgA & D
with assorted weapons). If I put these chaps in the
woods, then the rear rank of B won't be able to fire
and they would perhaps survive an encounter based
soley upon the IrrgA front rank. If I put them in the
open, they will shake from mounted charging, form Orb
and pray alot.
So I thought to put them between two 6E MI J/sh units
but back 120 so they could counter attack any enemy
that came within charge reach of the MI or in contact
with the MI. Problem is the gap would need to be 4 E
wide (1/3 J/sh, 1/3 J, 1/3 B) if used as designed. To
reduce it to 2 EE wide would make it work, but how to
organize these pups. I'd like the first two ranks as
B, and if I do this I could skirmish ;D, but they
loose the IrrgA and J/sh if needing to charge. What
to do?

Boyd,
I can't offer any help on the tactics for Normans. Under that other system I had
a small Later Frankish army that I found out stinks. Of course, they did much
better under DBM, but I'd already sold my hapless troops by then.
I do have a question, though. You wrote:

I didn't think a unit with some missle troops and some troops without missle
weapons could skirmish.
Am I misunderstanding your post or the rules?

1. Skirmish when in the woods. They shoot as if front rank. All have JLS
or B so they should be able to. Though bow not so good in woods anyhow.
2. Use Brush or Marsh.
3. Must put them back more than 120p to counterpunch. Your A-ness would
charge at anything less. This could open some serious flanks to be charged
on the MI. May not be so bad unless that MI breaks. But hey, Damour
apparently wavers with D class quite often, so it may be a good tactic.
Sounds like you've got to have the pilgrims though just for the flavor.
