I'm just curious-- from a rule's designer point of view-- can you expand on the
point that this was the blackest day. Changing rules in mid-stream? or is there
another reason? I'm not advocating this, mind you, but of all the aspects of
TOG that you "fixed", to pick this one is interesting.

I know you have rules on the type of questions permitted, and if I crossed the
line let me apologize in advance.

2. That day at Cold Wars 89 where Phil did a 'wrap around' with two 3x5
cards was the blackest day in ancients gaming..... The good news is, that
night
I decided that someday I would have my own published rules or buy his.....
:)

At Cold Wars 89, Phil B held a question and answer session out in the hallway
away from the main gaiming area.

At one point, a player asked him about a two element wide body hitting an enemy
such that the corner of the enemy body was hit at the seam between the two front
elements of the charger. Using 3x5 cards, Phil 'wrapped' the charger around the
target, with one element in contact with the target's face and one in contact
with its flank. The charging unit's elements were therefore no longer in
contact with each other except at a corner and said elements were now at 90
degrees to one another.

It flew in the face of the rules as printed. The 'overlap' mechanic already
takes into account 'extra' warriors eventually getting into the fight with a
body they 'outfrontage'.
There is no rule or diagram in 7th that shows this is how such a move should be
done. You know, that is ok - as a game designer I can tell you that you can't
anticipate every single thing. On the other hand, the game already had a
perfectly good way of resolving it built in, and what is more important, no
mechanics to handle the situation past the actual moment of 'wraparound.' Sure,
we could figure the results of the figs hitting the flank and the figs hitting
the front - easy. But what about combat results moves? What about fitting this
in proximity to other bodies or terrain? What if the wrapped around body stayed
like that and then got hit itself? How would the combat results of such a
situation go?
He did what he did and walked away. He refused to respond to further
clarifications of what would happen next or in a real game near other bodies
and/or terrain features. If a game designer wants to leave everything to his
players to decide, fine. But then he should leave it all, and not pick and
choose - dumping one startling, non-mechanically-supported bomb on them and then
leave them hanging.
NASAMW spent months - actually in one sense, years - sorting it out.

I resolved not to do that. I am imperfect - but I will not leave you guys
hanging.
Jon
