Warrior Ancient and Medieval Rules

Scott ... that's an excellent summation of ancients play in the state of
Texas. I think in the past, there was never a reason for people to join the
larger group, because attendance at our tournaments was always so strong,
usually 20 to 40 players. Since the advent of DBM, our tournaments in Texas
have been on the 8 to 12 attendance level, rather amazing given the size of
the player base.

Given the current leadership of the NASAMW-SW region, I would imagine that
this place will start to get in the fold a bit more every year. John Green
and a few from Louisiana are now regular attendees of the Texas events, and
the guys in Dallas have regular get together that are quite well attended.
Unlike the past, we are playing strictly the Warrior rules as they are
played in the east, rather than local rules for each large city.

There is one matter that would help bring this area into the fold and
increase attendance at Historicon. That would be extending the NICT
invitations from Historicon to Historicon rather than year to year. At our
current level of attendance, getting hotels in Texas in January, February
and March is problematic at best. This has led us to hold the majority of
our tournaments late in the year, which of course means the winners do not
get NICT invitations. Realistically, we will only have one tournament in the
time between January 1 and Historicon. As of right now, only John Green (as
a past champion) is qualified for NICT from the Southwest Region, and John
didn't win any of our three tournaments held since Historicon last year.

P.S. For any that are interested, it is looking like there will be a
tournament in San Antonio the third week of June. As of right now, we
estimate that it will have at least 14 attendees, possibly as many as 20. We
also will be holding events in September and November, probably both in
Dallas/Ft. Worth.

calender year and qualify someone for the NICT, that leaves said person a good
six months to plan on going to Historicon. Another item you might not be
aware of, if you hold a tourney in, oh, let's say June, and the qualifier(s)

qualification to carry over until the next year. All tourney organizers (or

can qualify to play in the NICT, only members can actually play and thus, must
join NASAMW.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I was told that you had to win an NASAWM
tournament in the same calendar year as the Historicon you attend, in order
to qualify, so people that won tournaments after Historicon 2000, but before
January 1st 2001 would not be qualified for the 2001 NICT.

      $25.00 Seems a bit steep to charge for just a tournament. As a Middle School Teacher, I ofcourse am rich beyond measure and this would never deter me, but I can only assume that the prizes must be on the scale of Ancient Wars put on by Dwight Coats in the middle 90's in Colorado Springs (You know, with the escort service and all!).       By the way, I will try to talk Jake into coming I he's game! It should be well worth the trip!

Sorry for the delay in responding to your email. 
 
Unfortunately, the last couple of tournaments we have only had 7 to 10 people show which forces the price to be in the $20 to $30 price range, but even at the price the host of the tournament is still losing a lot of his own money.  The single biggest expense is the room.  Unfortunately, conference rooms are not cheap.  Depending on location, the average conference room is $250 to $400 per day.  Occasionally, we get lucky and we are able to host a tournament in an university or school and then the overhead is dramatically cheaper and we can reduce the price to $5 to $15.  Another factor is the number of people attending these tournaments.  Given the fix cost associated with hosting a tournament, larger number of people attending the tournament, cheaper the per person cost.  At any given Texas tournament, the host will allow anyone to look at the financials of the tournament.  Rest assure, the host is not making a profit on these tournaments. 
 
Typical a Texas Tournament includes some or all of the follow:
3 to 5 games
plaques for 1st through 4th place
plaque for best painted army
certificates for swiftest army, most trounced, wrath of the dice god
varies door prize
prizes for 1st through 3rd
and lots of comradely
