You and your buried rules questions...lol

both are. You're talking about a 'normal' situation. Todd was talking
about someone who is outscouted, who cannot FM within 240p of the centerline.

The rules are a bit harsh on scouting, if your opponant has more
scouting point than you, you must place your first command first and
so on alternately untill all the commands are deployed.

Why not count the scouting points of troops who have been sent out to
scout?, if you outscout your opponent you get to see his army list
before he deploys, troops who are sent out scouting should dice for
fatigue, after all they might have tracked the enemy all yesterday
and through the night. with a 1-6 dice 1-3 they are fresh, 4-6 they
start the battle tired.

Maps are drawn and the armies deploy.

My 2 cents,

Some people have commands of 1 (Ewan Smile) and place them first so there are ways
around this problem of your opponent seeing too much.

The biggest bonus for outscouting comes if you like to forcemarch to pin your
opponent - he is forced to start 240 paces from the center line if he wishes to
forcemarch against you.

With the alternate commands going down - personally it's not a big deal for me.
WARRIOR's march moves allow me to be flexible with my advances after setup -
meaning that where they start isn't where they'll end up.

John,

With regards to our battle I luckily guessed correctly your setup. (John - Free
Company - Todd - Berber) John placed a Major Water on his left and a woods in
his center deployment stretching out to the ceter forward (6 rolled). I wanted
to try to reduce the board so my close foot wouldn't be outmanuevered so I force
marched 4 24 man units to the center (I outscouted John) between the river and
the woods. I was lucky John did not set up between the woods and the empty
table edge. My close foot would have been totally out of position and John
could have shot up all my LC.

This was one of the few times where outscouting my opponent was a huge advantage
for me b/c I needed to force the issue with my close foot. I still needed to
guess where he would set up when I mapped out my force marchers. If John had
more room he could have lined up his knights and run through my close foot.

Yes, that one was partially self-inflicted but Todd is, of course, a
very good player and likely it would not have been so simple as all
that! Oddly, it took me another 2-3 games before I decided my entire
HYWE deployment and approach to the battle was less suitable to Free
Companies and I did better (meaning only deployment-wise) against
Sean Scott's Swiss in the last round using just the idea you mention
below. In fact, looking at it I think my HYWE game could benefit a
bit from opening things up as well, provided I am not facing a LC
army.

One of the really great things about Warrior is that such a subtle
and seemingly insignicant difference in troop types changes the way
the entire army plays.

I was making light of the fact that running armies like HYWE or Free
Company I have decided, rightly or wrongly, that fighting
the "battle of the lights" is not the way to go - just not enough
and not generally as good as most. And there is never enough
scouting points to avoid being outscouted most of the time so it is
simply not something to worry about. Just accept that you are out-
scouted and out-force-marched and try to win the battle after
deployment anyway. Fight to your strengths rather than your
weaknesses or something like that.

Despite being completely outplayed by some very high-calibre
competition all weekend, I know this works sometimes.
