I tried to do that a couple of years ago to keep WRG 7, and ancients in
general, alive. We got very little support. I will be willing to do it
again in the crowds warrant it. By the way, we have scheduled close to a
half dozen events here in the midwest over the last year and never had more
than 6 players. Currently, there will be a Fast Warrior event at Call to
Arms, May 5, and a Warrior event at Nashcon, May 26. If you want to play let
me know.

Jacob,Do you think Dallas or San Antonio would be a good place to
start a new Con.or should we just do Nashcon? Our thoughts are that
if we can offer a warm central location sometime during the winter it
mght help our game overall. Regards David

Jake,       One reason that the turnout is so low is that none of us including the tournament directors have done very much to advertise our tournaments lately. Check out the last Spearpoint for instance. How can we get a response if there is no message?

Jacob, I think we just need to keep everyone informed as to the events. I will make sure every player I know of in Texas is informed and bugged about make as many as we can. I've also started talking to the " Dark Side " er the DBX'ers SmileSmile about their events to see if we can pool our resources to hold an event as big as Cold Wars west of the Mississippi in a year or so. Regards, David

There are so few dates left open anymore It would be hard to start a new con.
You can always tie into Fort Worth Wars in November, TwisterCon (Oklahoma
City) in March, Barracks Battles (St. Louis) in February, or any of the
others. NashCon is also good.

Kelly, That seems to be only a problem that CON. and Tourney directors west of the Mississippi have. How big is the K. C.  event, i.e., venders other games, etc.? Do you think we who live in fly over country could hold a CON. as big as Cold Wars?

as big as Cold Wars?

>Very very doubtful. The only other two cons that have come close to even
Fall In (which pulls in 900 people) are Little Wars and Nashcon. Little Wars
took some big hits in the 90s as it bounced from venue to venue and time frame
to time frame. It's only been the last year or two that it's finally starting
to creep back to what it was in the 80s (it pulled in around 500 people last
month). I haven't been to Nashcon in over 10 years because it's held on
Memorial Day weekend and I think national three day holidays are moronic times
to hold a convention. Therefore, I don't know how many people Nashcon pulls.
I do know that in it's pre-Memorial Day days, it too seemed to pull in healthy
numbers of bodies (I'm guessing in the 500 person range but that's all it is,
a guess).

>Lemme put this another way, in big population centers that *should* have
plenty of gamers (southern California comes to mind), there aren't any "big"
shows going on. They key, believe it or not, are dealers. I know, to
ancients players this seems nuts but then we're a bit different. Our first
focus at a convention is to play games. All the other gamer's first focus is
to buy stuff, then play games. I've learned that much from being on the
HMGS-East board the last 6 years. So, it appears that the key to a
"successful" convention is to have lotsa dealers. And dealers don't wanna
come unless there are lotsa gamers--wonderful chicken/egg situation. If we
used Little Wars and Nashcon as examples, it would appear that in order to
build a decent size show, first one needs to demonstrate a gamer base willing
to show up for that weekend. Then the dealers will come, then more gamers,
etc.

>But, since we're talking this in an ancients context, our first emphasis is
on gaming. The Gulf South DBM crowd is a good example of this. They put on
good size tournaments that are not always associated with any particular
convention. They guys are there to play games, not but stuff or play in
non-tourney games. The same could be done with what you all are talking about
which also means much less work on your part. Ask anyone who's done even a
little convention about the upfront work involved. Ugh.
