I have occasionally toyed with the idea of putting foot on my
elephant bases (there's no other reason to use the escorts; there are
are cheaper Irreg LI available, as well as better Reg LI). However,
there are two big negatives: it means that the elephants have to
approach as foot, and that they cannot roll long in charges/pursuits.
Again, a matter of philosophy to some extent: I asume that I am good
enough not to put my elephants in front of opposing bow blocks (when
the extra figures are useful in increasing CPF) and so don't worry
about having elephants units that are vulnerable to bowfire.

If you preferred, you would both put foot on the elephant bases *and*
give them detachments of escorts running behind them.

That would get your 3-elephant unit up to say 30 figures for CPF
purposes, which would indeed be a big deal if taking missile fire.
Not for me, though.

Aesthetically, I'd like to see the runner detachment in front of the
models. Why not do that?

Do you ever want to actually separate a runner detachment from the unit?
Or a detachement that is supporting figures, not models, for that matter?

Yes. Usually when I do this, it has to do with going into terrain.

Same for this type. I use detachments extensively with my Chinese. The
opponent suddenly facing another whole separate unit or two on the battelfield
at a critical point can be very enjoyable....
