The list used by Ewan in his army-building article says
>Mixed slingers and archers were common in the Seleucid Armies

I think Warrior specifies something about not mixing troops from
different lines; so one part of this question is how to utilize older
lists which are formatted differently.

But the major query is simply how to utilize them. I suppose you are
supposed to put only one weapon type on each base? Is the type of
weapon depicted in the front rank significant, or (esp when in
skirmish formation) does it work out that you just measure distance
from the front rank? Are there any tactical reasons to create mixed
units in the first place?

I live in Maryland. We top the list for heroin addiction, syphilis,
violent crime, and political corruption. So if you visit, expect to
be drugged, raped, robbed, and then taxed for the experience.[Attrib

It matters: units with e.g. S, Sh in front rank and B behind can fire
both ranks and remain shielded; very useful. The list specifies that
some troop types (e.g. the escorts) can be 1/2 of each troop type, so
mixing lines is not an issue. Yes, only one troop type per base. And
yes (although this is a rules Q and Jon will now beat me severely) all
ranges are measured from the front element (in part b/c otherwise a
rear rank of JLS could never shoot Smile ) - right, Jon?

What I haven't yet checked, and need to, is how Warrior treats units
with only partial shields who go into skirmish.

***When you say 'partial shields' do you mean units like the Mongols
where 1/2 the unit is shielded and the other half is not?
