Jon,
Under 6.112 Variable Moves it states that “Mounted troops scoring a 5 or 6 can
choose to add or deduct 80 paces unless charging impetuously, when they must
add.” Also “A body’s tactical order may also influence the variable portion of
the move.” Below this section is an example with a Hunnic HC rolling a “6”
result. Due to probe orders he cannot add 80 paces so he chooses not to deduct
80 paces and goes 160 paces.
My confusion and question is if the above rule give only two choices to the
Hunnic HC, to add 80 paces or to deduct 80 paces, and the Hun had probe orders
thus eliminating adding 80 paces, wouldn’t the Hun be forced to deduct 80 paces
and thus move only 80 paces?
Your example implies that a mounted unit has three choices if a 5 or 6 is rolled
for this type of variable move, deducting 80, adding 80, or making a normal
move.
I saw nothing about this in the clarifications and have been playing the “add or
deduct only” way.
Thanks in advance for your help and for all of your work for the game system.

Unless constrained by orders, as you point out, a body CAN choose to add or
deduct 80p when rolling a 5 or 6 on a variable move. Nothing about that rule
says it MUST choose to add or deduct (again unless orders/impetuous intervene).
