Jon,

The following questions came up in a game yesterday. Please refer to the file
"visibility_shooting.ppt" in the rules questions folder of the files section for
the group in answering this question.

The matchup is Italian Condotta vs. Indian. In the slides, the Italians are in
red and their unit is 6 stands of Reg C LI B. The Indians are in blue, and
their units are 2 units of 6 stands of Irr C MI LB,2HCW and 1 unit of Irr B
elephants. The large green oval is brush. Slide One represents the end of first
bound movement, and Slide Two represents the end of second bound movement.

Question 1: on Bound One do these opposing bodies stop marches 240p from each
other?

I believe the answer is yes they do. Refering to Warrior1214, Section 12.42,
Line of Sight, Terrain and Line of Sight, it says that "LI halted or making
only approach moves in... Brush cannot be seen beyond 120p." Since the LI are
making march moves they are not halted, and they are not making only approach
moves, so the visiblity limitations on Brush do not apply. At least that's my
reasoning.

On Bound Two the elephants make an approach move of 40p, and the Indian MI units
make a wheeling approach such that the inside corner (closest to the elephants)
moves ahead 45p and the outside corner moves ahead 80p. The Italian LI do not
approach. Note that a consequence of this is that the LI are outside 120p of
all Indian units. So:

Question 2: what is the shooting priority for the LI?

I believe the answer is the elephants. Refering to the same section of 12.42, it
follows that the LI are not visible this bound, since they are halted. Hence
they are known to the Indians, but not visible. Being known, however, is not
sufficient to make them eligible to be shot at. Under 8.3, Target Priorities,
it states that "The following are not eligible shooting targets: Bodies not
visible to the shooters element or to an element of their own body directly in
front of them." Since the MI are not eligible to shoot the LI, they are not
"shooters directly to front", and though they are nearest in arc, the next
highest priority for the LI is elephants. Hence the elephants get shot by 12
figures of bow at long range. Right?

If that is right, I'll note that both I and my opponent had a little trouble
believing that the Indian MI could see arrows streaming out of the brush into
the elephants and still find themselves unable to shoot into the brush. That
indeed appears to be a consequence of the rules, but it struck us as a little
odd, and hence I wanted to double check.

Yes, if the LI moved there in marches this bound.

Question 2: what is the shooting priority for the LI?>>
[
The elephants. Your reasoning is exactly correct.

And yes, the LI are known and not visible at that point, which can happen. And
yes, it is possible to be hit in shooting by troops you cannot see well enough
to return fire upon.
