Alex and I spent some over the holiday weekend practicing with Mongols in preparation for Cold Wars next spring. Here's a question that came up:

I know that mounted troops on a flank march can arrive dismounted (just as they could be deployed on table dismounted); Jon has answered to this effect several times previously. But:

if a flank marching unit is to arrive dismounted, which of the following is true -
(1) the decision to arrive mounted or dismounted can be made at arrival;
(2) a unit can arrive dismounted only if indicated in the flank march instructions, and then must arrive dismounted.
