I am just getting back into Warrior after an absence of several years. What are the armies du jour these days. I myself am an old school pike and elephant guy, but I suspect I am going to find myself well behind the fashion curve on what the latest Killer army is. What is the well-dressed General wearing? _________________ I am ugly, and Mom dresses me funny. |

Well... Once again there is a constant flux in Warrior armies being chosen. The recent trend this past NICT was JAPANESE (5 of the 30 armies were scary LEHI).
You could always take a look at the results of the NICT and see what type of armies are being chosen.
Place Player Army VPs
1. Derek Downs Khmer 48.5
2. Mark Stone 10 Independent States Chinese 43.6
3. Ewan McNay Sassanid Persian 40
4. Rob Turnball Alexandrian Imperial 38.2
5. Dave Markowitz Fujiwara Japanese 37.4
6. Tim Brown Late Imperial Roman 36.5
7. Dan Woyke Feudal Japanese 36.4
8. Charles Yaw Tartessian Spanish 34.7
9. Dick Hurchanik Fujiwaran Japanese 33.8
10. Jon Cleaves Later Welsh 30.6
11. Tim Grimmett Feudal Japanese 29.5
12. Mike Kelly Mongol 28.5
13. Marc Cribbs Mountain Indian 28.2
14. Chris Damour Medieval Spanish 27.7
15. Dennis Shorthouse Swiss 27.6
16. Rich Kroupa Alexandrian Imperial 25.3
17. Jevon Garrett Sicilian Hohenstaufen 22.6
18. Matt Kollmer Alexandrian Imperial 21
19. Todd Kaeser Knights of St John 20.1
20. John Garlic Feudal Japanese 16
21. Steve Hollowell Nikephorian Byzantine 7.9
22. Ed Bernhard Timurid 7.7
23. Mike Mallamaci Nikephorian Byzantine 3.7
24. Scott McDonald Mongol 3.5
25. Sean Scott Italian Condotta 3.7
26. Greg Hauser Sultanate of Delhi 3.3
27. Bill Low Late Carthaginian 3
28. Bill Chriss Hellenistic Greek 2
29. Frank Gilson Alexandrian Imperial 1.6
29. Bob Liebl Later Teutonic Order 1.6
There are typically a fair amount of knight armies - the lance rule of rank and a half made almost all knight armies viable - not just Teuts or Sicilian. In fact Tuets (and to a lesser extent Sicilian) has almost dropped off the face of the earth
Macedonians (Alex Imp. and Seleucid) are very popular again considering the new pike rules.
Dark age armies have become almost non-existent, but the new playetest rules are attempting to balance the game ... again.
Will the army trend swing back to SHK - the challenge against the hoards or Japanese armies, or will people look to elephants, thinking that there will be just such reaction to the Japanese armies w/ SHK???

Todd sums things up pretty well here. Pike/elephant armies are still very tough, and South Asian armies with larger numbers of elephants do very well. Knight armies are popular, with Knights of Saint John, Medieval Spanish, Wallachian, and 100 Year's War English probably topping the list.
We've seen very little of Vikings, early Scottish armies, Gauls, or other barbarian armies. That may change somewhat in the coming months.
Winners in the NICT and in the Cold Wars doubles tourney recently are as follows (I'm doing this from memory, so I may be off a bit):
2006 NICT: Derek Downs, Khmer
2006 Cold Wars: Frank Gilson and Dave Stier, Knights of Saint John
2005 NICT: Dave Markowitz, Alexandrian Imperial
2005 Cold Wars: Frank Gilson and Dave Stier, 100 Year's War English
2004 NICT: Derek Downs, Khmer
2004 Cold Wars: Frank Gilson and Dave Stier, 100 Year's War English
2003 NICT: Derek Downs, Silla Korean
2003 Cold Wars: Frank Gilson and Dave Stier, 100 Year's War English
2002 NICT: Chris D'Amour, Patrician Roman
2002 Cold Wars: Dave Markowitz and Todd Kaesar, Scots Common Army
