Many thanks to Scott McDonald for sitting out the Theme on Friday since we had an odd number and nobody to fill in.
Many thanks to Eric Turner for setting up the pre-set terrain on Fri and Sat.
Many thanks to Eric and Rich Kroupa for the terrain. I added some new stuff as well. ;)
More of my rambling thoughts later in this post.

Ahhhh..........
the burst of pride......
The Spartans take the Theme.......
They only needed a worthy commander. Yeah........!!!!!!
Thanks Dave for bringing home the gold.
Special thanks to all who participated to make the theme
a success as I see it.
I regret that Scott M did not get in.
IT is probably my fault. That spot
was mine.
`
But then we would have had bookends Spartans
First and Last positions.
I would love to see Dave's list.

This turned out to be the "car crash" convention. It started on my drive out. I slammed into something on I-64 in the middle of nowhere, southern IN on Tuesday night. Lots of grinding sounds afterwards. Took 30 miles to get to an exit that HAD LIGHTS and discovered the wheel well lining on the driver's side, front wheel had shredded. I went inside at the gas station and said "can I borrow some scissors?" and cut off large chunks of it. The bottom, side panel under the door was also buckled. Otherwise, my 1999 Celica with 199K miles on it ran fine!
Then Thu morning, I get an email from Chris Damour saying he'd been in an auto accident on Wed and couldn't make it up.
Then Fri or Sat morning, somebody backed hard into Greg Hauser's vehicle. I think we all made it home in one piece.
I'm going to start by talking about the venue and attendance. Good things about the venue were space (we had tons and everybody else had tons) and layout. It's all flat so loading/unloading was very easy. Some people expressed concern about the lack of parking but I didn't see it. The nominal "onsite" hotels were right next door and there were plenty of other lodging options. I stayed down the road 5 minutes at an American Best Value Inn which wasn't as ratty as you might think. And the advance room rate of $38 a night couldn't be beat.
Food onsite was meh but wow, if you drove 2 minutes down the road, you could eat practically anything. Even better, a new grocery chain, Wegmans, was right next to the Expo Center. What a place. Somebody called it the Epcot Center of grocery stores. Every night after we got done, I'd stop in for sushi and dumplings. I also availed myself of a bacon cheeseburger at the Beach Fries truck parked just outside the Expo Center.
The venue staff, at least early in the weekend, were on the prowl for booze brought in. They confiscated one bottle of wine in Thursday. Technically at any other venue, we've not supposed to bring in our own booze but they've never cared so this was definitely a first. However, as the weekend wore on, I saw a distinct lessening of that enforcement. I simply told folks to be semi-discreet and they'd be fine. And they were.
The main "bad" thing about the main area was noise. Concrete floor, high metal ceilings made for a raucus vibe. Funny how Valley Forge was equally big but far quieter (while still noisy). The Con directors told me that next year they're going to have a wall of draperies on the left-hand wall as you walk in that they've been told should ameliorate the issue somewhat. We'll see.
Others might consider another "main bad" thing to be the bathrooms. I don't know how many there were but the one in the main hall needed lots of help. Clearly the Expo Center doesn't know our demographic.
Finally, lighting. It was uniform in the main hall and just bright enough as to not cause headaches. But it wasn't all that bright. The lighting at Valley Forge was far better. The lighting in parts of Lampeter (not the back) was far better. Nonetheless, the lighting was adequate for all gamers in the main hall. The satellite ballrooms where tons of gaming was going on struck me as far, far worse, lighting wise. And yet, I think many of the non-tourney gamers preferred playing in the dark as opposed to playing in the noise.
Traffic. An old friend of mine drove down Fri from Rochester NY and hit I-95 south of DC just in time to go 9 miles in 2 hours. He either bailed to Route 1 or they moved people off onto Route 1. Regardless, anytime you hafta bail onto Route 1, You. Are. Doomed. In fact, Don Carter who lives just north of Fredericksburg in Woodbridge tried to come down Friday. He got two exits and gave up. The moral of this story is on Thu, you need to be south of DC prior to 3pm and on Fri, prior to noon. Otherwise, You. Are. Doomed.
Electricity and Internet. The main hall had these massive, modular plug in thingies that required a certain plug on one end and a bunch of regular plugs on the other. I saw *one* dangling on a far wall when I got there Wed night and immediately yanked it from that area and plugged it into mine. That meant my laptop could stay plugged in all day and as I discovered as the weekend went on, my laptop could be the "smart phone recharging station" for everybody. Valley Forge had a great wifi signal which helped me look up stuff on the Forum. The Expo Center in Fredericksburg had something similar....for about 4 hours on Thursday. Then it either broke or they turned it off. Considering they also had a seperate wifi signal booming in there except you needed a userid and password to use, I think they turned it off. I was quite miffed and have relayed my miffness to the Con Directors hoping they can change that for next year. Fortunately we had plenty of smart phones to at least pull up the Clarifications sheet.
Attendance. Sigh. I'm not sure what to make of this. Talking with the Con directors on Saturday, their preliminary numbers indicated that attendance was up 25% from last year. Okay, that's great news. And any tournament game involving armored vehicles had a very robust turnout (close to 100 people). However, any other tourney game? We were easily off by 25%. And by "we" I mean any system involving a pointy stick, guys riding horses, etc. Seriously. There were perhaps 24 DBA players (maybe a few more). We in Warrior had 20 and everybody else (including the usually robust Warhammer Ancients) were less than t hat.
Yes, driving down from the north adds anywhere from 2-4 hours to your drive. But as Derek and the Florida guys said, it cut 4 hours off their drive. I had hoped to see more people from the south come up but that didn't happen. And there were a ton of guys from the PA, NJ, NY and east of the Hudson who told me at Cold Wars they weren't "driving the extra distance" to come to Hcon. And they didn't.
Paul Georgian and some guys from the Boston area took the train down and *loved* it. It stops in Fredericksburg and it was easy to rent a car. They could bring all their crap, move around the car, drink booze in the club car and, given the fact we're all a bunch of post-50 year olds, go the the bathroom a lot. Hopefully more people from the New England area will consider this for next year.
At some point in this thread, I'll talk about Warrior.

Scott, thanks for all this detail. This is enormously helpful in evaluating whether I will attend next year, and if so how I should plan travel. Based on your description, I would most likely fly into Raleigh/Durham and drive up from the south (it helps that I have family in the Raleigh/Durham area).
But I'm curious what the traffic problems were like for folks driving up from the south. Anyone care to share any insights on that? |

Loved the emphasis on You. Are. Doomed.
I hit a deer in June, and so got a bye on the Car Crash Convention of 2012. I also stayed at American Best Value Inn, but not at the advanced room rate. Despite the short travel time, it was a real pain to get to the hotel. 3 lanes turn left, and the 4th lane was the straight through/and right turn, of which you have to turn left into a feeder road in order to get to the hotel. My wife has stated that she will no longer stay at sub-standard hotels, so we will be picking one of the on-site hotels next year.
Wegmens made an inroad in my area last year, so we knew what to expect. But the bright orange Beach Fries Truck tackled me and forced me to order a crab cake sandwich instead.
There were 3 bathrooms, but one was locked, and guarded! The two remaining rapidly got disgusting, and this does need to be rectified. It doesn’t help that all the urinals are set to the optimum height for a 3 year old.
Water was also an issue. I don’t think they realized that once we arrive, we are there for the duration.
I thought the lighting was vastly superior in the main hall over previous venues. But the noise was oppressive. My guess is other conventions have lots of portable walls deployed, which we don’t.
I wasn’t aware that WIFI was turned off, but it is advertised as available on their web site, so there is no excuse there. I have found though that when there are WIFI and crowds, that the number of connections available get used up quickly. You don’t need to be active on the WIFI, my son’s IPOD just latches on to one when it gets near it.
We left PA (near Philadelphia) on Thursday at 6, and were on site in Fredericksburg at 10. Going home took about a half hour longer.
I thought the parking was superior to the Host, and on par with the Valley Forge Casino.
We are considering Amtrak. $250 round trip for 3.
All in all, I find this place acceptable. Lots of space to deploy in, and everything in the convention is close by, as opposed to having to hire a Sherpa just to get to the dealers area. _________________ Phil

Thanks for the good report.
Very good observations.
One point that made me laugh, was
Wegmans. They must come from upstate NY
I remember being in one in the 80's around
Rochester NY. where my sister used to live
I was impressed then. It was a class above
then.

ps. I will look into the train thing. |

Just one thought - I'll post more later.
Terrain was good - heavy at times, but that is not a bad think IMO.
I'm not really sold on the "lets have more gullies" idea. I think that will slow things down and not be a good thing.

|
|
Steve and Derek can jump in with more comments later, but I can hit the highlights:
A. The drive time was much easier to handle. Ten hours in one day is pretty easy, especially compared to 16 hours to get up into the Lancaster area. Fredricksburg is great for coming up from Jacksconville considering the time.
B. The drive route up I-95 was pretty easy. We stopped at Maurice's in South Carolina for barbecue and had one more stop for gas. Other optional stops were for someone to purchase and release carbonated beverages.
C. Did I mention how easy the drive was? I would expect more people coming up from the Deep South region next year as word spreads how much easier the drive was.
D. Wegmans was great for lunch and dinner. The food vendor in the con was ok but it was much better to walk the two blocks or so to Wegman's and back.
E. Parking was reasonable.
F. Jacksonville and the surrounding several hundred miles is fairly open and spread out. We found all the one way roads annoying.
G. We stayed at some cheap hotel. Didn't spend much and the room was ok.
H. We were very excited about the rumored African Warrior supplement. I've started hunting for camel lancers but only found 1 in the flea market. Any recommendations for 25 mm Tuareg camel lancer figures?
I. I played in the NICT and theme this weekend. Even I finally got a headache during the fifth round and eighth game. Maybe cutting the NICT back to four rounds?
J. I really liked the preset terrain but thought that the tables tended to be too open in the center. When playing at Steve's Gym, something annoying usually ends up in the center.
K. We actually had weather pop up and affect a game. Thirst is really an annoying weather effect.
L. I liked the handicapping of lists in the theme tournament, it encouraged several of us to play armies that would other wise not be on the table. Oscan with a free 10% didn't seem overpowered, I had trouble in the theme games keeping the Oscan troops alive.
M. Bathrooms were not adequate for the facility.
N. Previous cons have had cups, water, and ice available for the attendees. That was missed at this con. |

We discovered Wegman's on Friday. Between Steve and I, we tried the following
A. 8 slice large pizza, I think this was around $14. It fed Steve, Jerry, and Derek with pizza left over.
B. Thai, Indian, and Chinese hot bar. I had a hard time leaving my spot of culinary heaven. I also kept mixiing up cuisines due to too many items to try. I liked the Thai chicken and vegetables. The Thai could have been spicier but it was still good even though it wasn't hot enough to make tears run.
C. Big salad bar, never got there due to the previous line.
D. Deli area for making subs
E. I think there was another hot food area with more normal entries, but I never paid much attention over there. |

Thanks for the writeups everyone - emerging after a trip on Monday morning to Green Bay - 4 AM wakeup was not welcome after the 11PM unpacking and arrival in Maine
Agree with all the points - loved getting together by our hotel pool for wine, enjoyed the gaming - berber were a lot of fun once I figured out how to use them - but not I think a NICT capable list - my standings were more a reflection of late luck than great troops - but IRR A cav can be fun (not that I remember them rolling up once in ther tournament).
Noise and cleanliness were my issues, and the whole alchohol thing - One of the things I enjoy at the cons is sitting BSing with everyone after the games - sadly we were reduced to 4-6 of us (of course the wine lasted much longer)
Otherwise terrain - dont do the gullies - I had one and I loved it - facing Mongol - but I am sure he did not - basically shuts down a board sector
Steve and Scott - thanks for umping - really had a great event |
