The sky was blue as Hector descended the stairs of the palace. He turned slightly to wave back at his father Priam. He gave a strained smile. Half way across the plaza, he could sense Aeneas approaching his side.
"Why so glum? Hector? The divisions are mustering on time."
"New reports have come from the coasts."
"So...??"
"Merchants and scouts relate the same information. Armies on the move. But more... Robert T, Kaesermeister, Ewan McN, Lord Greg, Jevon, Mateos, Lord Bill Elrond, and more are coming in....."
Aeneas eyes widened. "These a names of legend and myth......", he stammered.
"Indeed, truly a CLASH OF TITANS......."
" Should we retreat back to the city walls."
Hector with a look of resignation.
"No! The die is cast. Tell Polyduras that we march." |

Reports come in of armies wide and varied; four or five continents are sending their warriors... |

As Hector mounted his chariot, as runner approached and handed him the latest report.
It seemed that the whole world was on the march. There were names unheard of and lands unknown.
He lowered his hand as the report slipped from his grasp.
"Shall we continue to the camp, my lord?" queried the charioteer.
He nodded and motioned with his hand. |

Well, *THAT* went well!
Despite a couple of last-minute absent friends, we had an excellent turnout of 14 for the C5N Warrior tournament on Saturday: my thanks to all, and especially to Bill Low for his uber-stalwart support in supplying groundcloths, terrain, and several of the armies in use! C5N continues to be a great place to play: spacious, welcoming, and inexpensive. Special kudos to Terry Dix (who flew in from CA) and Rob Turnbull (who drove the 15-hour round trip from Cleveland): very much appreciated. All we need now is for the Deep South guys to come see what autumn looks like..
One of the armies Bill supplied was Aztec, to me, which is the first time I have played this in I think at least 15 and maybe 20 years. I played them a LOT under 7th, and I have vivid memories of my first NICT watching Todd K snatch the 15mm title from me in the last turn of the last game, as his Otomi went in and routed all before them . So this was a trip into nostalgia, but turned out to be very fun indeed and also successful, as I finally get my name on the trophy for my own tournament .
Tied for second were two Japanese armies, Dan Woyke and Jevon, with Dan winning the strength-of-opponent tiebreaker to receive a DBA army and a copy of Tacitus. After that, one point back, a four-way tie: Fred Stratton, Rob, Terry (the latter two having a 0-0 draw in the final round that was called after about 15 minutes!) and Todd. Neo-Assyrians, Han Chinese, Mongol, and Tepanec respectively.
Also exciting was th first outing of my new casualty markers from Scott - these were *GREAT* and had the added plus of coming in two flavours (cav/inf) that allowed me to also use them as indicators for the two main Aztec troop types (LTS vs 2HCT), a big plus in transparency. Todd has also painted up a bunch and (of course) gone one better by adding a tiny rare-earth magnet on each base, so that he can use tiny magnetic beads to indicate shooting fatigues also - very nifty. I'll put a couple of pics into the gallery.
A really good day: three games, plenty of good beer (OK, I'll take the credit for that), delightful riends. Thanks, all. |

I almost forgot.
Check the last photo in that album.
Todd Kaeser, that notorious user of ugly lead*, was awarded the official Worst Camp Award after turning up with unadorned wooden squares.
[*In case anyone's unclear: Todd competes with Greg Hauser for the most ludicrously gorgeous armies, camps, and accessories in the game. This was an aberration - and an excuse to give him a hard time ] |

Just to underscore the sarcasm of that last post: one highlight for me of the weekend was that Todd and Matt Kollmer had been conspiring to paint me some knights: pictures added to that same Google Photos link. One unit each: Todd's has the ridiculously fabulous boar banner (and yes, it's historically correct! - Richard III's motto of Loyaulte me lie (accent needed on the first e), or 'loyalty binds me'). Matt's in contrast has the historically implausible but fabulous Liver bird shield - he knows well that I am a lifelong fan of Liverpool FC!
Thanks, guys: this was beyond kind (and literally took my breath away when I realised that the fancy knights they were showing off were for me!). Expect me to bring HYW to a table near you very soon.. |
