Although not officially elephant escorts, does it make sense advance with a 2E elephant unit behind a 2E LI infantry unit right up to 40p. Would the LI add support shooting to the target as the elephant charged through the LI screen? Would the LI screen be the shooting priority of the target of the elephant's charge?

Are there lists that have the LI screening unit a detachment of the elephant?

I would personally not charge through the LI for a few reasons:

1 - elephants are disordered interpenetrating through LI -2 in combat
2 - elephants would still take the support shot (not the LI). Support shooting is against the troops that are charging or in contact.
3 - the LI is not able to support shoot into the opponent as they are not part of the charging unit nor do they end behind the final flank of the enemy.

LI is a decent support for the elephants and I have used them as a screen for shooting.

So in my example, elephants that want to charge would have to interpenetrate the LI before the charge, thus taking the prep fire and support fire from the target, assuming it has missile weapons.

If that is the case, I see why competitive elephant armies use 3E units and try to get B moral elephants:)

The elephants would not have to take Prep fire but would have to take support.

Todd,
thanks again for the prompt reply but I'm a bit dense on this.

Assuming my elephants approached through their LI screen to within 120p of a crossbow unit directly to their front and with no other priority than the my elephants, why wouldn't they take prep fire from the crossbowmen?

They would take prep fire (the elephants).

Todd's comment is based on you charging through the LI, something you generally don't want to do as he notes...though in that case the LI would be the target of prep fire if shooters as shooters to front are the highest priority. However, as in the other Rules post, if the LI can't shoot at the XB and the Elephants are in range, then the Elephants are the target of Prep.

Note you can place LI escorts on the base with elephants. This can be useful, if at a couple of disadvantages (move as foot priority and take double hth casualty fatigue due to irregular foot)...typically you are taking less overall CPF given the extra figures per element.

Finally, some elephant units are or make use of detachments to 'pad' their figure count against CPF...Khmer does this, various other lists.
