Alex and I will be a father-son team for the first time in... more than a decade, I think. And we'll both be playing in the mini on Friday. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Update: I will not be there at all. I shall instead drink alone in NY.

[Yes, covid-related. If you choose to travel, stay safe, y'all. Wash your hands! No, more than that Smile]

I will greatly miss this Sad.

Rob has informed several of us that he won't be there either.

I'm pairing with Rich. With some people deciding not to attend, that means we might have to be flexible with pairings, etc.

Also, all tournaments have been moved up to the Showroom. I was not informed of this until literally the last minute. I bitched loudly. I've been told it's now been renovated, better lighting, etc. However, I remain skeptical.

What I don't know is if this is permanent or temporary. I was told that Lampeter was being worked on and might be very different than before. So, this might be a "take one for the team" weekend. Or it might be an okay spot now. I'll be getting feedback from all the Tourney GMs and of course y'all after things are done.

Yeah, I know: super-sucky idea. Especially if you're en route, have a hotel room, yadda yadda.

Also, who the f am I to suggest this anyway? Smile

Very brief bio for those who don't know me: neuroscientist, currently in Albany. Right now, working with the state DoH, some of the best epidemiologists around, and e.g. the Wadsworth lab (nation's best testing lab) on covid response. Married to a lead engineer at Regeneron, who are working to get the first treatment in place. Expertise in bio data analysis.

Summary: this kind of gathering is exactly what we should NOT be doing. Even if you yourself, and even your family, are young and healthy enough that infection is unlikely* to harm you directly, it is probable that you will pass on the virus to a chain and someone who will die.

I hope that's blunt enough. Links at end if you want good data/analysis. Currently, our best and only hope is to attempt to minimise and slow spread (not completely contain; it's too late and the governmental response has been too slow for that), and try to hold infaction at a rate that can be handled by the healthcare system while we work frantically to get a treatment, get tests available, get out of flu season. No-one should be travelling.

That's even more true, unsurprisingly, if you have recently been to e.g. NYC, Westchester, or Washington state, the current highest-known-infection points. Anyone in that category attending is a clear public health danger. Everyone else: by being in the same space as such folks, you create a significant risk of being patient zero for a *new* outbreak.

Yes, HMGS should have cancelled. That didn't happen; now it's on us. As I type, Ireland just banned all such meetings: they are far, far more ahead of their infection curve than we are. Similar measures coming into play all over the globe: there's a reason for that.

I *do* recognise the cost of lost gaming and socialisation. For me, it's one of the only two times a year I might get to play and see friends. But this year: stay home, get through this, make it so that future years exist.

Anyway: a personal plea, request, hope. Please: think about it, bite the bullet, and stay or go home.

Thanks - Ewan

(*Risk appears to vary hugely. Healthy kids, risk well below 1% for serious/fatal response. Smoker over 60, or anyone with underlying diabetes/lung issues/whatever, anywhere from 5-15% serious/fatal. You are infectious well before any symptoms appear.)

Happy to provide more in-depth whatever, but really trying not to be preachy and not to get buried in the science details here Smile.[/u]

I will NOT be attending. My wife works at an assisted living/memory care home and it would be quite bad if I contact the virus and bring it back to her and said home.

I'm horribly bummed - I not only enjoy the playing but I appreciate the friendships even more. Never mind the figures I've worked on for many that I'll be unable to deliver Sad It is with great apologies on my part to those affected.

I hope that you all stay safe and we are able to get through this difficult time together. I will spend the time painting (as usual) on a few projects for Historicon and building up my medieval collection.

Take care all,

Todd

As so as one who is home with a mild respiratory infection (and not going to work to prevent others getting it- even if it is just a cold) - don't do it - our profile is high risk, and our parents are even higher risk (if we are over 50 our parents are over 70) - a very high risk population.
And my expertise is non-existent other than having read every article I could find on the subject, and all the experts agree with Ewan - listen to the experts not the politicians
