 |
|
If my Berserkers (loose) are a detachment of my Viking Hirdsmen (close) can they form a front rank? (in army list rules for Vikings they could not be part of the same unit unless they were the same order),
So my question is if I pay for the Berserkers to be a detachment, is it then legal for them to form a front/rear rank with a close order unit?
If they may form the front rank as a detachment and the close order unit has a general, and they are the front rank, where does he go, being of a different order?
If they cannot join to their parent unit what happens if they rout? Where do they go now?
MANY THANKS,
Bill Peck |

There are several lists that allow co-mingling of close and loose order foot. Brigans, who appear on Feudal French, Medieval French, and 100 Years War English are a notable example. Such a unit is not restricted in terms of who can be front rank or a different rank.
So in your case, the loose order Berserker detachment can be joined to a close order parent body, and as long as all other rules about detachments and parent bodies are abided by, could certainly be in the front rank. For example, you could deploy initially with the detachment joined and in the front rank. |

Note 2.513 Staff Element
"If a staff element is incorporated into a unit, the staff element must always be in the unit’s front rank." |

Physically how does a staff element legally form a rank with troops of a different order? Won't this break the unit formation (definition of a block for example)? |

You do the best you can in such a case. It may make for an unusual looking unit, but all the other rules work just fine. |
