The First Annual Ewan-Jevon-Con took place on Sept 13th, 2025 in the lovely Fortress of Gaming in Albany, NY.
We used 6x4 foot boards and 1400 points. In hindsight, despite playtesting by me, that 1400 points on a small board gave off the feel of a lot of troops. I guess it favored knights and elephants, to some extent, as they are costly. We tried to get out the word to use less competitive armies but we didn’t have any hard and fast rules regarding choices of armies. For the most part people used these guidelines, and I guess, maybe chose some A-/B+ armies.
Chris Damour came in for a visit out of the Utah Training Grounds (be careful he was busy recruiting any and all to come out and go to “no-where” Utah and then go 80 miles past that. I boxed up an attacking army and figured I would let him loose on they guys. I should have chosen a lot more “less” morale choices as Chris would say “why pay for morale I’m not going to use.” And yes, we did tell the story of him using Medieval Spanish back in the day vs. me and I did send my knights away from his Irreg D LMI LTS,Jls,Sh unit to find the Moogs which were an “easier” target as I knew that Chris would pass the morale test and win the day.
We played 3 full rounds of 3 hours each. Scores are adjusted
1. Dave Markowitz, Later Carthaginian 26
2. Dave Stier, Medieval French 17
3. Ewan McNay, Free Company 15.6
4. Todd Kaeser, Medieval German Princes 12.2
5. Dan Woyke, Anglo-Irish 11.3
6. Ben Markowitz, Post Conquest Inca 10.7
7. Matt Kollmer, Zulu 9.6
7. Jevon Garrett, Sonhai 9.6
8. Bill Low, Thracian 4.5
9. Christ Damour, Rajput 3.4
Some highlights/turning points:
Nice to see 2 African Warrior Armies. Taking away the -2 for Zulus facing P/LTS helped make them more playable, BUT still lancers were their bane.
Ewan and Dave Stier had a 1-1 game in the second round going into the last turn. Stier sent in some knights, rolled +4 and boom goes the dynamite.
First round Markowitz tried desperately to give me the battle vs. my Germans. Hannibal rolled in first turn into my block of Irreg C LTS,sh and proceeded to roll -4. I followed him up with a -2 and did not kill him. Dave then ground me down with HTW Spanish and Elephants and my Pike and LTS gave way.
Chris D, as one would expect, fought so many combats, and did roll up here and there, but his troops just didn’t have the energy to fully push through to win the day. My bad for not giving him the better Irreg D/C troops he would have needed to do the job properly.
In Dan and Matt’s game (Dan called out Matt last turn stating he would be crushed so I had to set that up) Dan routed a Zulu unit. The Zulus had no gap and directly to their rear was an Irish HK unit. Matt hit said unit impetuous, tired, shaken, disordered, AND exhausted and did not rout the HK…
Great thanks to Jevon and Ewan (and Jenny) for all they did. Ewan hosted delightful dinners and accommodations for some of us Jevon's connections with the Fortress of Gaming allowed us to arrive early and stay late.
We had 5 boards in use and we rotated amongst them. For the last round I changed the terrain on all 5 because we couldn't guarantee a new board unless i did so. Terrain was only modest to light to accomodate all the combat troops. In my battle with Matt we killed over 1700 points out of the 2800 alloted.
Looking forward to seeing the gang again at Fall-In in November.
