Had a blast. Played 7 games and like every show, by the end, I start to remember how to play. Two games were me and Rich warming up, one was our Mini armies, the other our Open armies.
The odd numbers meant byes although Todd umped in the Open but he played with me as a team in the third round.
I didn't use chess clocks but will make damn sure we do that at Cold Wars. Probably didn't need them, everybody's fast but I know from years past that when I institute something and then don't beat on everybody, everybody tends to lapse over time. The days of lengthy deployments are gone no matter what I have to do.
The only new experimental rule we didn't use last year was the +40p on up rolls by loose/open foot, aka The Houser Rule. It came up quite a bit and we referred to it as "You've been Housered".
The 6th Ed shooting rule really doesn't "fix" the preponderance shooting has on the game, at least not in any way where people who agree with me on that go "yeah, it's working". However, it does, somewhat, reduce the preponderance of shooting armies that are brought. I say that with a straight face given the army mix this year. But my messing with shooting at Fall In has always been done with two things in mind, a (hopeless) attempt to figure out shooting from a mechanical standpoint and the resulting de-emphasis on those kinds of armies. It's not anything that I would apply in a broader sense, thus, it'll remain a funzy Fall In thing.
Todd and I "ganged up" on Dave in Bound 3 of the open with me running Hussites. My 2-year project painting them is mostly done and I had enough to bring. I also wanted to run them in the most "mobile" manner I could envision instead of simply laagering up on my board edge.
It worked really, really well. In that last game, Dave left his center so massively empty, I started marching a wagon unit toward his camp. Almost got to it before he turned around a Reg D spear unit. Ah, but we still had a Polish knight unit that we'd started marching so while the wagons screened off the spearment, the Poles sacked the camp.
Nonetheless, we saw an almost-700pt swing in the last 15 minutes as our other Polish knights finally cracked and Todd and I couldn't pass any resulting waver tests, thus a 5-1 game turned out 3-3. I used up all my waver test goodness in my previous game against Fred where at the end I took something like 10-12 waver tests at various times and passed every one of them.
The best part tho were the reactions of people to seeing a Hussite laager unit like that on the other side of the table.
I also think this was the first time where winter tables and the frozen lakes didn't grab anybody and drag them down. In our 3rd game, we moved on it frequently, came close a couple of times but the ice held.
As I've been saying every year coming out of The Plague Times and I've been going back to Fall In, it's a great event for us, different armies, low key play and the former Host is shaping up as a decent venue. _________________ These Rules Suck, Let's Paint! |
