As Dan and I tied for 13 raw points we went to the adjusted scores for a result after three rounds. Dan and I did not play each other and we have agreed to a throwdown in my basement for the title, but as history has shown us the Marians are in for a tough fight.

With an odd number of players I jumped into the fray. Since both of the armies I brought were being borrowed Bill Low loaned my his Ottoman box and I configured a list for Arab Imperial. I think the weighting was pretty fair all things considered – maybe Nik Byz should have been 1400. Overall, the desired effect was had and 3 Magyars and a nice mix followed.

NICT Results:

We had 16 participants show up, which caused me a little consternation (more on that later) and 9 tables (with some kind reconfiguration from 2 other groups allowing us to grab an extra for more variety). On the 9 tables I tried to go for 2 dense, 2 light, 5 medium. We had the Frank Gilson Memorial Ice Board and a Dune board. There was a board with 2 villages and some vineyards and a board with a minor river running through it (I didn’t like the results of it personally, so I will fix the idea in my head next time I place terrain). Feedback was solid with the configuration.

After the first round we had eight scores with 5s – I was in a little panic. Worst case scenario was to have all of them come out with 5s and then two more 5s in the final – meaning adjusted score would decide the NICT. Alas, it worked out (for me at least), that we had only two – Ewan and Dan – come out with a 5 in the second round pitting them against each other in the final round. There were a slew of 7/6 scores and while I didn’t want to have Markowitz/Markowitz I had to with a premium on adjusted scores and they were the next 2. Seeing Fred just up from a 6 after 2 rounds and then take 3rd place shows that adjusted score is vitally important.

We saw three players with Roman armies from three different time periods. I played Jevon’s round 2 vs. Bill (and in the mini with Marian) and I can attest to the staying power of HI Legionaries with all those rules. Bill rolled the spots off the dice vs. me and the legions still held. I will also restate that elephants are just damn tough.

Ewan outdueled Dan in the finals for a 5-1 victory and the championship. Dave Markowitz got revenge against Ben in the NICT (Ben beat him in the theme) in a very bloody battle with multiple commands going into retirement.

The ice board did its thing and a few units were taken, but not nearly as much as in the past.

As always, so nice to be around friends – lots of red wine and Matt brought Circus Maximus for a very late Saturday night with Rich edging Ewan for the win. I had a spectacular crash on the second turn.

Wally’s basement (flea market) had some decent finds. Matt did his best “Robert” and found 9 Essex knights (28mm) for $15 which he traded me to painting fees from another find of some 25mm Vietcong and U.S. soldiers.

Thank you all for those who helped out – Rich Kroupa for terrain (so much to lug around), Bill for loaning armies and booking hotel rooms, Greg for running mini, and Matt and Dan’s help with terrain setting/reorganizing on day 2 and 3 and food runs for me as stepping away is always tricky. Scott McDonald for bringing plaques and mugs and being President. If I missed anyone else who helped please forgive me.
