I don't know Martin. As a guy that played Early Hebrews on "the
tournament circuit" I had a lot of fun with them and I was more
successfull than not. While I agree that it can suck when fighing a late
Medieval army where even the horses are wearing skirts and you are armed
with chert points and fire-hardened sticks, the point system seemed to do
a good job of balancing things.
Plus there is the whole amusement factor involved when your opponent
asks questions like: "You are playing WHAT army?" "You have HOW many
scouting points?" and (my favorite) "Why are you rolling for CLEAR
terrain?" (The answer to the last one is that terrain just slows me down,
and it is already tough enough chasing down those horses as it is...)

As I said there is no harm and it can be fun...but don't expect everything to necessarily pan out. IMO it's preferential for the rules to give a good reflection of historical on historical engagements rather than warp this in order not to unalance (extreme) un-historical match ups. I'll also agree that occassionally playing something outlandish can give you an edge....however it's the same argument, merely the benefits are reversed.
