Please, my friends in Dallas/Ft. Worth ... please do not take this
post the wrong way. It is only meant to offer the whole story.

I know the DFW group has no control over when Ft. Worth Wars is held,
but from the point of view of most San Antonio players, it comes at a
very bad time, that being right in the middle of football season. We
have a handful of guys down here that are heavily involved in
football, both coaching and playing, and children that play. This was
a major contributing factor in the no-show from San Antonio for FWW
2003. I attended in 2002, only because I happened to have a very rare
bye that weekend.

I feel very confident that this thought has been expressed many
times. I know I have made several posts on this topic on the NASAMW-
SW Region message board. Quite frankly, I have no Earthly clue why
the people that run FWW, would even try to hold a CON in Texas,
during football season.

This is not unlike the tournament we had in San Antonio last weekend.
We knew that so close to Christmas, we should not expect many out-of-
towners. We were happy to have the ones we got (Kelly, Jon Garlic and
Bill Chriss), but were not disappointed that you guys could not make
it, and fully understood that December tournaments are usually poorly
attended as a general rule (at least down here).

I think we could do a big show in Dallas some time in the future. You
have a wonderful venue and are centrally located. Looking at the draw
you had for your last tournament, if you added the San Antonio
players to that draw, you would have one of the larger NASAMW events
outside of Historicon.

If that were to happen, perhaps this whole thought of having a NICT
down here, would be workable. Having said that, I fully agree with
the thought that we have to show our attendence FIRST, before we ask
for some sort of committment.

Now, for the part that might be taken wrong. ;-)

Before this was the NASAMW SW Region, it was the Southwest Society of
Ancients, and after that the Lone Star Historical Miniatures Society.
Both of those groups were very large, and our TOG 6th & 7th events
were better attended than TOG at Historicon. We used to hold at least
five 40+ events a year in Austin. One of the major organizers at that
time was our own David Beeson, who was President of both groups at
one time or the other.

My honest opinion is our group should try to work together, and for
the love of God, take advantage of the organizational experience of
people like David, who can tell you little things like, "Don't hold a
tournament during football season, and expect good attendence!" ;-)

Speaking very bluntly, it seems like right now the DFW group does
whatever they want to do, and our South Texas group does whatever we
want to do, and both groups end up throwing up their hands and
wondering why everyone isn't buying in!

Thank you for listening to my random rant. :-)

That is very true, and my posts at least were not intended as barbs towards
anyone or any place. Just a general sense of frustration.

I agree. Perhaps we just need to abandon the FWW idea and get a better (and
yearly consistant) weekend. It would be something you could mark on your
calenders way in advance and count on every year. As attendance grew and
word spread, it would have hopes of growing into a large reagional yearly
event.

> I fully agree with

That is what we have been lacking on all Texas fronts.

No disagreement from me. Currently our Texas organization is fractured
badly. David in the times I have met him is not only a good arganizer, but
a good diplomat. It will probably take someone like that to rebuild.

I think you are right on with a minor execption. For three years we have
tried both Tcon and FWW as THE regional event. We may have choosen poorly
as the attendance numbers bore out, but we did select those events because
they were already yearly held. Its not so much a case of us doing what we
wanted as it was what we THOUGHT was best for the gaming community as a
whole. As for today however, your above para is dead on.

Our momentum in the DFW group has ground to a halt. We play in my kitchen
and at chez Bump or occasionaly chez Hudelot. We have no one up here with
any desire to try a tourny anymore.

Don,
I'm sorry to hear that no one in Dallas has any desire to play in
tournaments anymore. Sad Speaking for Jack too here, and I'm sure he doesn't
mind me doing so, we have found Dallas and your crew down there to be a Super
group of guys to game with. Too bad you've lost your interest in competition
gaming with Warrior. Does this mean that you're going over to DBM? ;)

Kelly :)

I'd just tell you that spring, especially March, is generally a horrible
time. Established cons like Cold Wars and Genghis Con are settled in Feb and
March. I don't know about anyone else, but I would not (could not) especially
skip Cold Wars for a small regional tourney.
April is the only free month in the between Feb and June. Maybe you could
look at Martin Luther King weekend...

Or you could looseln your grip of football for Warrior a little bit. I know
you're a fanatic, but I think you are making a big assumption when you lump
all Texas warrior guys in the same category as you....lol What position did Don
play? :)

Historically, September, October and the first half of November are
very bad periods to hold a tournament if you want big attendance from
Texas folks.

On the flip side, any time after about mid-January all the way
through the summer is a great time. In the heart of winter has been
historically good, especially in South Texas, where we have
relatively nice winter weather.

If I wanted to hold a high attendance tournament in this area, I
would probably pick mid to late March, and schedule it FAR in
advance. That was the big key to the old groups - the tournaments
were always scheduled at least a year out.

Call to Arms in Kansas City is 30th April-2 May here in Kansas City. I am
not sure where it’s going to be held, but if I were to run a 1200 point
Open, how many people from outside of KC might be able to come.

As of now, Jon was planning to put on a Roman theme Fast Warrior event to
tie in the release of Imperial Warrior, but if enough people commit, he
could change that.

Tcon is in March.
Far in advance is key. It's competing with Cold Wars that is the issue...lol

KC is an easy trip. They have a direct flight to and from DFW and San

Are we talking 25mm or 15mm for the open?
I would change May from Fast Warrior to 1000 or 1200 to get people to come.
But I am the only player here with a full 25mm army, so it will be a while
before we can do 25mm.

something like this, it really should be in 15mm--that enables the local base
to fully participate with armies of their liking and choosing, makes it
easier for those traveling by air (easier psychologically I guess), and broadens
the potential player base. I mean any 25mm player has something in 15mm just to

I used to subscribe to the idea that a player with a lot of armies in 25
could just bring them and we'd get a lot of people playing 25mm that way. I do
not anymore. The players I have recruited chose 15mm for various very logical
reasons and they generally want to play with the armies they painted and not
someone's leavings. Those who are perennially figure-whores may not care what
they play with, but the guys who do take the time to collect and paint their
own armies should be supported in that scale and not coerced into another with
borrowed lead, especially when loaners are often substandard and patchwork.

That means 15mm here in KC for the forseeable future.

No, you;re just a hwore. A figure whore is someone who plays but doesn't
ever quite get an army of his own done... not that there's anyone like that in
KC, mind you...lol
My figures and armies are not "leavings" btw. Whenever I offer up my
collection, I do so with no intention to play, thus maximizing whatever folks
might
want to utilize. I don't know too many folks willing to haul half a dozen or
more 25mm armies for people to use.
Scott, the quality of painters I am with is such that pretty much any
borrowed army is 'leavings' from a quality of presentation point of view. These
guys
have generally pushed beyond simple game-quality paint and basing and just
about every army they do is a paint award contender.

That is something to be fully encouraged, as you know.

mind me doing so, we have found Dallas and your crew down there to be a
Super group of guys to game with. Too bad you've lost your interest in
competition gaming with Warrior. Does this mean that you're going over to
DBM? Wink

No no. I may have choosen my words poorly (I used 'try' not 'play', but
should have used 'run'). We still will play, we just do not want to run
them. With KC 8 hours away, and SA 5 hours away, I will still play a few,
but right now I am whipped as far as getting one together. The passage of
time will certainly change that too Smile.

If I wanted to hold a high attendance tournament in this area, I
would probably pick mid to late March, and schedule it FAR in
advance. That was the big key to the old groups - the tournaments
were always scheduled at least a year out.

Tcon is in March.

I remember that is why you could not come to Tcon last year. It was in the
middle of your busiest time.

Split end. I was tiny too (5'1" and 98 pounds!).

That's a very good time for me. I would very much enjoy playing in a
1200 point open, or something such.

KC is an easy trip. They have a direct flight to and from DFW and San
Antonio.

Are we talking 25mm or 15mm for the open?

Thanks ... g
