I would like to add my little Greek voice in support of this comment.
I would really like to have one of those odd shaped gadgets that you
can stick between figures to see how far away they are and also a do-
hickey for doing wheels, although the wheel thing seems a bit easier
to me than laying rulers down on a crowded field with sharp pointy
things sticking up at you. May I suggest that FHE (yes, I know, you
guys already have too much to do) find someone who will make these in
bulk (hopefully machined in metal like Ewan's, as I suspect the wood
ones deteriorate in precision a bit over time)? Then you could sell
them on the website a la averaging dice.
I used to think these things were just for overly compulsive players,
until this year's Open when poor Scott had to come over and point out
to me that a charge that I thought was in reach was off by at least
3/4 of an inch...Man was THAT an embarassment. Now some of those
kinds of errors are caused by moving figures around before the
question comes up (I saw this more than once, but one of Mark's games
coms to mind where he pointed out that it was too late to know
retrospectively how far away units had been because they had been
moved), and some are caused by brain freezes after 5 rounds of non-
stop playing, but a 3/4 inch mistake is still a massive social
blunder, I think. My opponent, Steve Hollowell, was quite gracious
about it and the outcome of the game was not affected, but a playing
aid would have helped a lot. They speed play, obviate much of the
need for the referee, and most important from my standpoint,
eliminate the embarrassment associated with such blunders...

If the wood ones will do for now Bill, Litko has them in both 15mm and 25mm.
And before anyone asks, I don't have an interest in the company I have just
been very pleased with their bases and measuring tools.
Here is the link to the measuring set:

Howdy,
We have many of the same needs over in the DBM world. There was a guy in
Canada who made a bunch of machine cut measuring rods in increments of 2,
3, 4, 5, and 6 inches, as well as the 40x40 base on a metal rod
(affectionately called a "Barker"). He sold a bunch of these sets
initially, but once the market was saturated he could hardly give them
away. This is probably fairly typical with most such gadgets. Initial
euphoria, plus tapering off. I've also seen flat devices that are
multisided that allow you to measure various distances.
A very hand tool for measuring distances is a good metal protractor. If the
question is if the move is 4", then set the protractor to that width and
check it.

Actually, we are in the middle of having Gale Force Nine do all these for us for
sale on our website. If there is a particular playing aid you'd like to see,
just put it here. Diagrams/pictures always good.
When we have our base plan together (some time after I get back) we will post it
here for comments. But the basic plan is a ~ $10 bag of plastic markers and
measurers sold online with the FHE logo and also by such stores as Silver Eagle
and Military Matters, etc.
