I was looking at Feudal Warrior recently and noticed that there aren't any Irr E "levy spearmen"--all Irr E troops are armed with IPW.

So I wanted to check the reasoning...I am guessing that since the untrained peasants aren't wielding their spears properly, they don't count as spearmen, or even javelinmen, and their spears aren't any more effective than IPW...is that more or less correct?

On the other hand, the Irr D spearmen in the lists are presumably troops that have been trained--albeit poorly--in use of their spears, and moreover are not very motivated...like a typical town militia.

Also, I wanted to check my understanding of how they are treated as elements--it looks like all/most Irr E elements are treated as LMI, at three figures per base, is that correct?

Hi there!

I can't speak to the historical intentions of list(s) as I didn't write them but I would imagine this is a list-specific decision as there certainly are Irr E LMI armed with B, JLS, Sh, etc. And yes, you are correct in that Irr E troops are always loose order, so 3 to a stand 40mm deep (see 2.21).
